The Blog

How Epocalymus Came About

First, the prefix Epoca comes from the Greek word Epoché (εποχη), or Epoch in English, which refers to “a period of time”, and has another meaning which describes the theoretical moment where beliefs in the real world are suspended. Second, the suffix Lymus comes from the Latin word Lumen, which means light, or enlightenment. Hence, putting these two words together that form the blog’s official name, Epocalymus, refers to the Age of Enlightenment (or the Age of Reason). The initial expression of this little blog describes the immense sadness relating to the prevalence and rise of fundamentalism in today’s society, which is apparently the betrayal of the age of enlightenment. Currently, there is a shift of focus with this blog’s content, which is basically this: To live to the fullest and keep searching for the truth.

A Brief History of This Blog

It has been over five years since I started blogging. This Blog has been around way before its final residence in WordPress dot com. Back in those days, the purpose that led to this Blog’s creation was simple: It aims to deeply express what was within my heart, which was in great agony and pain. During those times, I was walking through the darkest valley of my life. In fact, I was in a bad shape and great physical pain as well. Thankfully, the joy of blogging helped me through those tough times and made me stronger than ever before. Not only have I walked out of those circumstances victorious and triumphant, I had discovered my new passion in writing during that journey.

In April 25th 2004, I founded this Blog in Blogger dot com by the name of keuriseudo, which I used to published my deepest thoughts during those terrible days. About two years later, it became a “free blog” which I used to update my daily thoughts and those silly little events I attended. Furthermore, I created themes to this Blog by giving names such as ‘Bardic Circle’ I, II, III, as well as IV, at bardiccircle, and ‘Renaissance’ at noelpalace. Mind you, I was too free to do anything and back then, I had so much free time to waste that I did not know exactly how to utilise it. So to waste a bit of my free time, I posted some crappy entries to keep myself busy.

During my matriculation as an undergraduate in mid-2006, I changed my blog’s name to 冰世界 (bing-shi-jie) at bingshijie under the influence of that melancholic trait of mine. After a painful and abrupt break up with my ex-girlfriend slightly less than a year later, I took a temporary hiatus while slipping back into the “free-blogging” mode. It was during the second year of my undergraduate life, which was towards the end of the year 2007, my blog actually took a turn in its style of writing and became a “philosophical blog”, or in short, an “Existentialist’s blog”, bearing the name of Existentialist. The scope of this theme aims to be the conveyer of some of my private random thoughts of how life should be lived even in times of doubts and uncertainty, a period which I was undergoing back then. It was, as usual, jam packed with thoughts relating to religion and the lack of faith.

Towards the end of 2007 and the entire year of 2008, I started developing doubts about my belief in the Christian God. Furthermore, disillusioned by the way my previous church functioned, and how I was being treated as a member of the church, I became hostile to religion and superstition itself. Even in my recent writings, there is still some resentment against certain subjects related to religiosity and the things religious individuals do. After Existentialist, my final decision was to get myself a finalized website to call it my own, and told myself to start becoming serious in blogging. Hence, I started a new blog over at WordPress dot com by the name of Epocalymus, which initially acts as a voice to speak out against religiosity and fundamentalism. It is a blog that champions free thought and reason. After a long hiatus during the Spring of 2009, I decided to return into the blogging world and start off anew. This Blog will be a fresh page for everyone, including myself, and will be constantly updated.
